First of all I disagree with the blanket characterization of the "church" as more interested in money, mega churches and luxurious vacations. I would be interested in learning who is leading the way in assisting families with a disabled family member. My guess would be faith based organizations. I think the bigger challenge is educating rather than bashing the church as to the ministry opportunities. Generally people are afraid of what they do not understand. So rather than wagging our finger at the church and motivating outreach through guilt I believe educating christians about disability and ministry opportunities is key. I would agree that the church has some work to do but I would dare say that majority of the body of Christ is NOT more interested in "building mega centers to house more people in order to get more money" but rather when educated about a need and are open to the leading of the Lord and will step up. Will everyone? No, but I believe more will than you give the Body of Christ credit for. Your final few sentences are right on when you talk about "teaching our people" and we need to be "a unique group of people." I have had a personal relationship with Christ for over 37 years and have been a part of His church for over 50 years and I have to say that in my experience the "church" you descibe in the beginning of your post is the execption rather than the rule. We need to speak the truth in love.SAMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13983111307764246786noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6825243.post-64145320445061851182008-09-16T11:14:00.000-07:002008-09-16T11:14:00.000-07:00I believe that there are a few reasons why the chu...I believe that there are a few reasons why the church has not made themselves available for people with disabilities. The first reason is we as a church don't truley have an understanding of what love is, and secondly, we have not educated our members on the importance of helping people with various disabilities. It's unfortunate that we the church are more interested in other more pressing issues, such as building mega centers to house more people in order to get more money, making sure the pastors have personal jets, and spending alot of the churches money on making sure that our pastors can go on luxurious vacations and have big homes. We need to hold our pastors and leaders to acccountabiltiy, and tell them enough is enough! Enough preaching about: you too can have the better life,or you need to be on top of your finances. Don't get me wrong, having your finances in order I believe is necessary. However, I believe telling people to control their desires is a better one. I'm sure God is in tears right now over the current state of the church. We need to get the focus off of us by asking ourselves a question, how can I help someone else have a better quality of life? This can be done by designing programs teaching our people about the many disabilties, and in doing this you make people feel more comfortable. Lastly, we need to remind the church that God has called his children to be the salt of the earth, a unique group of people, earth changing. So get off of your butt and do what God has called you to do!

Yvette Roberson
EDU 541Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
